Through hand-built and slip cast ceramic forms with layered surfaces and metal components, Isys Hennigar’s work considers myth and narrative surrounding the body and the natural world. The stories embedded in her work center around themes of health & sickness, transformation, desire, and attempts to harness the unknowable. Through lifelike forms and meticulous adornment, the work explores the metaphorical connection between bodies and vessels, which she describes as “mediators in the interactions that they might indicate or facilitate.” Interweaving myth, folklore, historical symbols, and imagery from everyday life, Hennigar’s work explores interactions — real and speculative — between animals, plants, objects and people.
